MacDONALD, Marie Sylvia
MacDONALD, Marie Sylvia - Born in Poirierville, Cape Breton, October 7, 1926, Marie, a loving mother and wife, passed away peacefully August 13, 2005. She was a crafter and seamstress who took great pride in her work. Marie was not only a mother to eight, but also a mother to all the children in her neighbourhood. Those who knew Marie remember her huge heart and willingness to help those in need. For a period of time she worked as a personal care worker brightening and easing the lives of those she cared for. She was predeceased by her first husband, John William MacDonald, and brother, Nicholas. She is survived by her husband, Ben Ranson; sister, Loretta, Poirierville; brother, Raymond, Ontario; children, Raymond (Fran), San Francisco, Calif.; Denise Lanterman (Bill), Victoria, B.C.; George, New Glasgow; Carroll, Victoria, B.C.; John, New Glasgow; Debbie Atteberry (Tom), Halifax; Walter (Mary), Stellarton; Dana O'Sullivan (Mike), Stellarton; 10 grandchildren, and goddaughter, Diane McDonald, Sydney. Visitation held in H.C. MacQuarrie Funeral Home, Stellarton. Memorial servicewas held in the funeral home with Father Bill Burke officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. MacFARLANE, Rev. Alexander Douglas
MacFARLANE, Rev. Alexander Douglas - 83, St. Peter's. The death of Rev. Alexander Douglas MacFarlane, retired priest of the Diocese of Antigonish, occurred in Richmond Villa, St. Peter's on August 12, 2005. Born in Port Hastings, he was a son of the late Murdoch A. and Catherine (MacDougall) MacFarlane. He received his early education in Port Hastings and later attended high school in Port Hood and Port Hawkesbury. He graduated from St. F.X. University and did his theological training at Holy Heart Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1952. During his priestly ministry, he served in various parishes as curate, administrator and parish priest. He served as assistant at Stella Maris, Pictou; St. Joseph, Reserve Mines, and St. Joseph, Sydney. In 1960, he was appointed Parish Priest at St. Ann, Thorburn, followed by pastorates at Our Lady of Sorrow, Gannon Road; St. Joseph, Antigonish County; Holy Cross, Glace Bay, and St. Mary, East Bay, from which he retired in 1987. The last member of his immediate family, he is survived by in-laws, J. Laughlin MacDougall, Sydney, and Carol MacFarlane, Ottawa, Ont. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, John (Isabel) and Dougall (Carol); sisters, Sarah (Laughlin) MacDougall and Mary. Visitation was held in St. Mary's Church, East Bay, . until time of funeral with Rev. Angus MacDougall, Vicar General and other priests concelebrating. Burial in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Church Renovation Fund, East Bay; Richmond Villa, St. Peter's or a charity of choice
MacLEOD, Roger Garret
MacLEOD, Roger Garret - 55, Alexandra Street, Sydney, formerly of Grand River, passed away August 14, 2005, in Cape Breton Regional Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Born in Grand River, Cape Breton, he was a son of Anne (MacKay) MacLeod, Grand River and the late Duncan Donald "D.D." MacLeod. Roger was employed as a truck driver by various companies around Cape Breton, including Municipal Ready Mix, and more recently the Department of Transportation. Besides his mother, he is survived by sisters, Carol Anne (Dank) MacInnis, West Bay; Joyce, Grand River; Gail (Glen) MacDonald, Sydney; Faye (Kenny), Dartmouth; brother, Parker (Patsy), Blacketts Lake; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Allister, Megan, Amy, Matthew. He will be missed by his cat, Tessie. There will be no visitation by his request. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Grand River Presbyterian Church, Rev. FOUGERE, Patrick Gerard
FOUGERE, Patrick Gerard - 51, Canso. It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden death of Patrick on August 14, 2005. Pat was a son of Gerard and Mabel (McNeil) Fougere, Canso. He leaves to mourn his wife, Doreen (Collins) and their daughters Tanya (Steven) Myatt, Canso; Lisa (Corey Doyle) and grandson baby Blake, Canso; Jennifer (Ronnie Bouchie Jr.) and grandson Hudson, Petawa-wa, Ont. He is survived by brothers, Edward, Canso; Vincent, Halifax; Fred, Lawrencetown; sisters, Laura (Clayton) Haines, Canso; Mary (Ronnie) Helpard, Sheet Harbour; and his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Joseph and Michael. We remember with pride his days as a founding member of the Canso Trawlermen's Co-op, as a former union leader with the UFCW, and as a tireless supporter and advocate for fishermen. Pat was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 46, Canso, and volunteered on numerous boards and committees. His dedication and passion was always aimed at advancing the well-being of his beloved hometown. Pat's keen sense of humour, intelligence, love of his pets "Cuddles" and "Pebbles", and for performing karaoke with his many costumes and songs will be sadly missed. Visitation was held in Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, Canso. Funeral service will be held Friday in Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Father Daniel Boudreau officiating. HOWELL, Woodrow Dexter Sr.
HOWELL, Woodrow Dexter Sr. - 77, Creignish, passed away August 16, 2005, in St. Martha's Regional Hospital, Antigonish. Born in Corner Brook, NL, he was a son of the late Claude and Irene (Hoskins) Howell. Woodrow, Eileen, and sons founded Woody's Crane Rentals 27 years ago. Prior to that he worked at various construction jobs in the Maritimes including being a crane operator during the construction of the Seal Island Bridge. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 721, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43, Solomon Lodge 46 and Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Port Hawkesbury. He and his wife enjoyed many trips in their motor home along with their dog, Cindy. Surviving are sons, Lennie and granddaughter Victoria, Craigmore; Woody Jr. (Marcella) and grandsons Jamie, Bobby and Christopher, all of Troy; stepgranddaughter, Kelley, Yarmouth; daughter, Nancy (Todd) Gilmore and grandchildren Jessica and Michael, all of Lawrencetown; sisters, Dorothy Kennedy, Jean (Jim) Jewer, Glenda (John) Langer, all of Corner Brook, NL; brothers, Roy (Pauline) Howell, Corner Brook, NL; Maxwell (Doris) Howell, Stephenville Crossing, NL; Ron (Jean) Howell, Corner Brook, NL. He was predeceased by his wife, Eileen Marie (Hardy) Howell. There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. Friday in Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Rev. Michael Conrad officiating. Burial in the church cemetery. Memorial donations in memory of Woodrow may be made to a charity of one's choice.
